ABSTRACT

This case study examines the Gram Vikas Society's youth-centric apprenticeship initiative aimed at promoting sustainable growth of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and enhancing employability among rural youth in Karnataka, India. Established in 2008-09 as a non-profit organization, Gram Vikas focuses on integrated rural development through community health, socio-economic activities, and especially youth empowerment. The apprenticeship program aligns with national frameworks such as the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS) and the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), leveraging government support to address skill gaps in rural MSMEs and improve economic inclusion. The initiative's core objectives include building technical and vocational skills among rural youth, supporting MSME productivity by providing a skilled workforce, fostering entrepreneurial ambitions, and promoting inclusive economic development by engaging marginalized groups. The program targets rural youth aged 18–35 and MSMEs operating in manufacturing, services, and trading sectors within Gram Vikas' operational areas. A mixed-methods research design was used to evaluate the program's impact. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with apprentices, MSME owners, program coordinators, and government officials. Quantitative analyses focused on business performance indicators such as revenue growth, employee retention, and apprentice employment status before and after program implementation.
