Petaling Jaya Community Perspective on Smart City Framework

ABSTRACT


Objective – The purpose of this paper is to identify the sub-attributes for the smart city framework in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.Methodology/Technique - A pilot study was carried out on the Petaling Jaya community. This research adopted a quantitative approach by distributing questionnaires from 126 respondents in Petaling Jaya Community. Smart city elements and performances were designed to identify the smart city framework in community of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The data were analysed using a statistical package for social science (SPSS) and structural equation modelling – partial least squares (SEM-PLS) were used to construct a framework.Finding - The current findings reveal that the Petaling Jaya community agrees with the sub-attributes of the smart city framework. The results also reveal that the Petaling Jaya community agreed that smart economy plays the most significant element in the smart city concept. On the contrary, smart infrastructure and utilities are the least important element due to Petaling Jaya city is already provided with high-end infrastructure currently.Novelty – This study makes a new contribution to smart city literature knowledge. This study collects the insight of the Petaling Jaya community on the important elements that authority should focus on to feed the demands of the Petaling Jaya community itself. This paper is unique because it is focused on micro-social or "people's power" where the concept of a Smart city should be installed in the first place. This paper also can be used as a reference for other urban planning knowledge for comparison purposes at the early stage and we expect the result should be the same despite a larger sample size in the future.
